Both sit in Madhya Pradesh, the state at the centre of India's tiger map, and both are on the shortlist of anyone serious about seeing a wild tiger. But they are different reserves with different pleasures, and choosing between them comes down to a simple question: do you want the surest possible sighting, or the grandest possible forest to look for one in?

Choose Bandhavgarh for the odds

Bandhavgarh is the smaller, more concentrated park, wrapped around a ridge crowned by an ancient fort. It has long carried a reputation for one of the highest tiger densities in India, and for many travellers that translates into the single best chance of a wild tiger anywhere in the country. The trade-off is that its popularity shows: at a good sighting, vehicles gather. If your priority is simply to see a tiger — and to give yourself the best odds of doing so — Bandhavgarh is the park to book.

Choose Kanha for the forest

Kanha is far larger and grander: a great sweep of salSalA tall hardwood tree that forms the dominant forest of central and northern India.Read in the glossary forest broken by open meadows, or maidans, that give the park its Jungle Book atmosphere — this is the country Kipling drew on. It is also the stronghold of the hard-ground barasinghaBarasinghaThe swamp deer of central India, named for the many tines of its antlers.Read in the glossary, the swamp deer brought back from the edge of extinction here, a conservation success you will see almost nowhere else. Tigers are present and seen, but the whole experience is quieter and more spacious than Bandhavgarh's. Choose Kanha when you want the safari itself — the scenery, the birdsong, the sense of wilderness — to be the reward, with the tiger as its crown rather than its sole purpose.

Or combine them

The two lie within a few hours of each other in the same corner of Madhya Pradesh, and they combine into one central-India safari that plays to both strengths — Bandhavgarh for the odds, Kanha for the grandeur — often with the tiger reserve of Pench added between. It is the shape we recommend for travellers for whom the wildlife is the point of the trip: several days in each, unhurried, giving the forest time to deliver. Which is better for tiger sightings, Bandhavgarh or Kanha?

Bandhavgarh, on the odds. It is a compact, high-density park long regarded as offering some of the best chances of seeing a wild tiger in India. Kanha has tigers too, but in a much larger area, so sightings can take more patience — the trade for grander scenery and a quieter safari.

Can you visit both Bandhavgarh and Kanha in one trip?

Yes, and many wildlife travellers do. The two lie within a few hours of each other in Madhya Pradesh and combine into one central-India safari — often with Pench added between — giving you Bandhavgarh's sighting odds and Kanha's grand forests in a single journey.

What is Kanha famous for besides tigers?

Its scenery and its swamp deer. Kanha is a great expanse of sal forest and open meadows — the landscape that inspired Kipling's Jungle Book — and it is the stronghold of the hard-ground barasingha, a swamp deer saved from extinction here and seen almost nowhere else.

When is the best time to visit Bandhavgarh and Kanha?

Both are dry-season parks. The core zones are generally open from October, with sightings improving as the land dries through the cooler months and peaking in the hot months before the monsoon, when tigers come to water. Both close during the monsoon. October to June is the broad window, with April to June the hottest and often the most rewarding for tigers.

How many days do you need at each park?

Allow at least two to three days — several game drives — at each, since a single drive leaves too much to chance. A combined Bandhavgarh-and-Kanha trip therefore runs comfortably to six or seven days on safari, more if Pench is added.
