When To Go

October to March for the plains; the October half-term and Christmas–New Year weeks are our busiest British season. April–June is superb for tigers, September for Ladakh and the hills.

Booking Christmas and New Year: The Premium, and Whether It Is Worth It

The real cost of the festive fortnight is not the rate. It is a mandatory gala supplement payable at the hotel, a second one six days later, and a cancellation window that turns your money non-refundable around the end of September.

Jaipur in the Third Visit

Jaipur carries three separate World Heritage inscriptions from three different years, and almost nobody gets them right. Amber is not part of the Jaipur listing. Jantar Mantar is a World Heritage Site inside another one. And the body that evaluates these things recommended Jaipur be refused.

Dietary Restrictions in India, Honestly Handled

India does have an allergen law, and it does cover menus. It also exempts, in terms, any meal modified at a customer's request — which is the only kind of meal a private traveller ever eats. What protects you here is not the regulation. It is knowing which questions to ask.
