Guests often ask me to choose between Jaipur and Udaipur as though one must win, and the truthful answer is that they are not really rivals — they are two different moods of the same royal state. Jaipur is Rajasthan at full volume: forts, bazaars, colour and scale. Udaipur is Rajasthan at its most romantic: lakes, marble and a stillness the pink city never quite has. Which suits you depends on what you want the trip to feel like, and on how much time you have.
Choose Jaipur for scale, colour and craft
Jaipur is the grander introduction and the easier one, sitting on the Golden Triangle within a half-day's drive of Delhi and Agra. It gives you the hilltop Amber Fort, the honeycomb Hawa Mahal, the astronomical instruments of Jantar Mantar and a City Palace still lived in by the royal family — and beyond the monuments, the finest craft shopping in India, from block-print and blue pottery to gemstones. It is busier and more energetic than Udaipur, which for a first-time traveller, a family or a shopper is exactly the appeal. If you want the fuller, more varied Rajasthan and want it easy to reach, Jaipur is the answer.
Choose Udaipur for romance and calm
Udaipur is the one guests fall in love with. Built around Lake Pichola, with the marble Lake Palace seeming to float on the water and the City Palace rising behind it, it is the most romantic city in India and the natural choice for a honeymoon or a couple travelling to slow down. It is smaller, gentler and more walkable than Jaipur; the defining experience is not a fort at midday but a boat on the lake at sunset. If you want beauty and rest over bustle, Udaipur wins easily.
The honest answer: see both
In practice, the best Rajasthan trips do not choose. Jaipur and Udaipur sit at opposite ends of the classic circuit — Jaipur near the top by Delhi, Udaipur in the south — with Jodhpur and the desert often threaded between them. Two or three nights in each, linked by a flight or a scenic drive broken with a heritage lunch, gives you both the grandeur and the romance, and lets Rajasthan build from busy to serene. Where a traveller genuinely has time for only one city, I ask a single question: is this trip about seeing Rajasthan, or about resting in it? The first points to Jaipur; the second to Udaipur.

Is Udaipur or Jaipur better to visit?
It depends on the mood you want. Jaipur is grander, busier and richer in forts, bazaars and craft, and it is far easier to reach on the Golden Triangle — the fuller first-time introduction to Rajasthan. Udaipur is calmer and more romantic, built around its lakes and marble palaces, and the better choice for a honeymoon or a restful trip. Most well-planned itineraries include both.
Should I visit both Jaipur and Udaipur?
If you can, yes. They sit at opposite ends of the classic Rajasthan circuit and offer different experiences — Jaipur's colour and scale, Udaipur's romance and calm — so seeing both gives you the fuller picture. Two to three nights in each, linked by a short flight or a scenic drive, is the ideal shape.
Which is more romantic, Jaipur or Udaipur?
Udaipur, without much contest. Its lakes, the floating Lake Palace and the sunset boat rides on Lake Pichola make it the most romantic city in India and the classic honeymoon choice. Jaipur is magnificent but energetic; Udaipur is intimate and calm.
How many days do you need in Jaipur and Udaipur?
Two to three nights in each is ideal — enough to see the major forts, palaces and lakes without rushing and to enjoy an evening in each city. That makes a Jaipur-and-Udaipur pairing a comfortable five to six nights, often with Jodhpur or the desert added between them.
Is Udaipur worth visiting if I've already planned Jaipur?
For most travellers, yes — it adds a completely different register to a Rajasthan trip. Where Jaipur is grand and busy, Udaipur is a lakeside city built for slowing down, and the two together give a journey both energy and rest. It is one of the easiest and most rewarding additions to a Golden Triangle or Jaipur-based plan.
