Ellora is a long run of basalt cliff into which, between roughly the sixth and eleventh centuries, craftsmen cut thirty-four temples, monasteries and halls. What makes it extraordinary is not only the scale but the company it keeps: Buddhist, Hindu and JainJainA follower of Jainism, an ancient Indian religion whose central commitment is non-violence towards every living thing.Read in the glossary monuments stand side by side along the same escarpment, carved in overlapping centuries — a rare record of three faiths sharing one sacred hillside. UNESCO inscribed it in 1983.
The masterpiece is Cave 16, the Kailasa — not built but excavated, cut downward from the living rock into a full free-standing temple to Shiva, complete with courtyards, galleries, elephants and a towering spire. It is the largest monolithic rock excavation in the world, and standing in its courtyard, with the cliff rising sheer on every side, it is hard to credit that the whole of it was released from the stone with hammer and chisel, from the top down.
Visiting Well
- Ellora is spread along the cliff; the Kailasa (Cave 16) is the centrepiece, with the Buddhist caves to one end and the Jain group at the other, so allow a half-day and let the midday light fall into the deeper halls.
- The caves are closed on Tuesdays — worth noting, as nearby Ajanta closes on Mondays, so the two are easy to pair across consecutive days.
- October to March is the comfortable window; the Deccan heat from April is severe, and the monsoon greens the hills but can make the rock slick.
How Elevated India Arranges It
We take the Kailasa first, before the light is overhead and before the coaches arrive, then work along the cliff to the quieter Jain caves at the far end. Ellora pairs naturally with Ajanta — we build the two as consecutive mornings from a comfortable base near Aurangabad, with a private guide who reads the carving rather than reciting dates.
Questions, Answered
What is the Kailasa temple at Ellora?
Cave 16, a temple to Shiva carved top-down from a single outcrop of basalt rather than built up from blocks — the largest monolithic rock-cut structure in the world. Courtyards, spire and sculpture were all released from the living rock over generations of work.
How long do you need at Ellora, and is it near Ajanta?
A half-day sees Ellora well. It lies near Aurangabad in Maharashtra; the Ajanta Caves are a longer drive from the same city, and because Ellora closes on Tuesdays and Ajanta on Mondays, the two pair cleanly across two days.
