Sanchi crowns a quiet hill in Madhya Pradesh, and its Great StupaStupaA solid domed Buddhist monument, built to house relics and walked around by worshippers as an act of devotion.Read in the glossary was begun by the Mauryan emperor Ashoka in the third century BCE — among the oldest stone structures in the country, and the best-preserved group of Buddhist monuments in India. Later rulers enlarged the plain brick mound into the stone dome that stands today, a hemisphere that represents the cosmos and once enshrined relics of the faith. UNESCO inscribed the complex in 1989.

The glory of Sanchi is its four toranasToranAn ornamental gateway or hanging placed over a threshold to mark it as auspicious.Read in the glossary — carved stone gateways set at the cardinal points, raised in the first century BCE and covered with reliefs that tell the Buddha's lives in dense, vivid narrative. In an age that did not yet depict the Buddha in human form, he appears here as symbol — a wheel, a tree, a pair of footprints, an empty throne — so the gateways are both great sculpture and a window into how early Buddhism imagined the unimaginable.

Visiting Well

  • The hilltop complex is walkable in a morning: the Great Stupa and its gateways, the smaller stupas, the ruined monasteries and the Ashokan pillar, with long views over the plain.
  • A site museum at the foot of the hill holds the finest loose sculpture, including the lion capital, and is worth the half-hour before the climb.
  • October to March is the kind season; Sanchi lies about an hour from Bhopal and close to Vidisha, so it is an easy half-day from either.

How Elevated India Arranges It

We come to Sanchi early, when the hill is cool and quiet and the low sun throws the gateway carving into relief, and bring a guide who can read the toranas as story rather than stone. It makes a rewarding half-day from Bhopal, and sits well on a central-India route between the region's Buddhist sites and temples.

Questions, Answered

Who built the Sanchi Stupa and how old is it?

The Great Stupa was begun by the Mauryan emperor Ashoka in the third century BCE, making it among the oldest stone structures in India. Later dynasties enlarged it and added the carved gateways; the complex was inscribed by UNESCO in 1989.

What are the gateways (toranas) at Sanchi?

Four carved stone gateways set at the cardinal points of the Great Stupa, raised in the first century BCE. Their reliefs tell stories of the Buddha's lives — and because the era did not depict him in human form, he appears as symbols such as a wheel, a tree or an empty throne.
