Hampi

The Vijayanagara capital in a landscape of granite boulders — ruin on a scale that takes days, not hours.

Hampi was the capital of Vijayanagara, and for two centuries one of the largest cities on earth — a place foreign envoys described in terms they clearly expected not to be believed, with bazaars trading diamonds by the measure. In 1565 the empire lost at Talikota and the city was systematically destroyed over several months. What remains is spread across some forty square kilometres of granite.

The landscape is the other half of the story: boulders the size of houses, balanced and stacked by nothing but time, in ochre and rose above the Tungabhadra river. The Vittala temple's stone chariot and its ringing pillars sit inside it; so does Virupaksha, which has been in continuous worship for longer than most of the world's religions have had buildings.

Curator's Advisory

Hampi is not a half-day stop, whatever the itineraries suggest — the site is enormous and the clusters are kilometres apart. Give it two full days with a vehicle and an archaeologist guide. Work the ends of the day: Virupaksha and the Vittala complex in the early morning, Matanga Hill for the light going down over the boulder field. The middle hours here are genuinely punishing from March onward, and the granite holds heat.
