India's pricing bandwidth is wider than any destination we work in. The same two weeks — same cities, same monuments — can cost $2,500 per person or $25,000, and both travelers will come home with stories. The question is not what India costs; it is what the India you want costs.
The honest framing for a designed private journey: comfortable mid-range travel runs roughly $250–400 per person per day; genuine luxury — palace hotels, the best guides, seamless private transport — runs $500–900; and the apex tier, all-suite and by-invitation, runs well beyond. International flights (typically $900–1,600 round-trip from the US in economy) sit on top.
Where the money actually goes
Hotels dominate the budget — often sixty percent of a luxury itinerary's cost — and they are where India offers the world's most seductive upsell: for the price of a good business hotel in New York, you sleep in a maharajaMaharajaA ruling Indian prince — literally 'great king'; a maharani is his queen, or a princess ruling in her own right.Read in the glossary's palace on a lake. Guiding and transport are the quiet second line: a first-rate private car with driver runs modestly by Western standards, and the difference between an adequate guide and a superb one is perhaps $40 a day — the best-spent $40 on the subcontinent.
Food is where India is generous: it is nearly impossible to spend heavily on eating, even magnificently. Monument fees, trains and domestic flights are minor lines. Where travelers overspend is shopping under charming pressure — and where they underspend, to their cost, is on the safari supplement and the extra night that would have let the trip breathe.
A worked example — and what moves the number
A two-week private Rajasthan journey for two, at the level we design — heritage and palace hotels throughout, private car and driver, top guides in each city, Taj at sunrise, a night at a wilderness camp: plan around $14,000–20,000 for the couple on the ground, plus flights. The same route in strong four-star hotels with the same private structure: $8,000–11,000. Group touring runs far less, and delivers a different product entirely.
Three levers move the price most: season (December–January peaks; October and February soften), hotel tier in Jaipur and Udaipur where the palace temptation is strongest, and trip length — because fixed costs amortise, a sixteen-day trip rarely costs proportionally more than twelve. Tell us the number you are comfortable with and we design to it honestly; the quiz takes two minutes and asks exactly that.

Begin Your Private EnquiryQuestions, Answered
How much does a two-week trip to India cost?
As a designed private journey: roughly $4,000–5,500 per person mid-range, $7,000–10,000 at genuine luxury level with palace hotels throughout, plus international flights. Backpacking and group-tour travel run considerably less.
Is India expensive to visit?
India offers the best luxury value on earth — palace hotels at city-hotel prices, private drivers at a fraction of European cost — but it is no longer 'cheap' at the top tier. Value, rather than cheapness, is India's real advantage.
How much should I budget per day in India?
For private, well-hoteled travel: $250–400 per person per day at mid-range, $500–900 at luxury level, covering hotels, private transport, guiding, meals and entries. Street-level travel can run under $50; the apex tier runs over $1,500.
What drives the cost of an India trip most?
Hotels — especially the palace properties of Rajasthan — followed by season and trip length. December–January command peak rates; October and February deliver near-identical weather for less.
Are flights to India expensive from the US?
Typically $900–1,600 round-trip in economy from major US gateways, and $3,500–6,000 in business class, varying by season. Booking three to five months out and flying mid-week helps.
