The Golden Temple is Sikhism's radiant heart, and it is the least defended sacred building in India: gold over marble over water, open on all four sides to anyone who covers their head and washes their feet. There is no ticket, no hierarchy of access, no side entrance for the important. The point of the architecture is that there is no such thing.
What the photographs never carry is the sound — the Guru Granth Sahib sung without pause from before dawn until late at night, carried on speakers across the pool, so that the building is never silent and never still. Amritsar's other registers sit close by: Jallianwala Bagh's narrow garden and its sober arithmetic, and the Wagah border's nightly operatic stamping, which is either absurd or moving depending on the hour you arrive.

Curator's Advisory
Visit the temple twice in the same day — once before dawn for the Guru Granth Sahib's procession from the Akal Takht, and once near midnight for the retiring ceremony. The hours between hold the gold; the hours at either end hold the meaning. Serve an hour in the langar kitchen if your schedule allows it. Heads are covered and shoes left at the gate for everyone, without exception.
