Pokhara gives you the Himalaya without the trek. The valley sits at around eight hundred metres and the Annapurnas rise to eight thousand barely thirty kilometres north, which is one of the steepest horizontal-to-vertical relationships anywhere on earth — and why the range looks impossible rather than merely large.
Machapuchare, the fishtail, is the peak that does the work. It has never been summited; permission was withdrawn after the 1957 attempt stopped short of the top, and it has stayed sacred and unclimbed since. From the lake it simply hangs there above the water, and no photograph has ever quite carried it.

Curator's Advisory
Dawn is the whole point. The range takes first light while the valley floor is still in shadow, and an hour later the haze has usually closed it down — so the early start is not optional here, whatever the weather looked like the evening before. Take the lake late in the afternoon instead, when the wind drops and the fishtail doubles itself in the water.
