Mandawa was a trading post on the caravan routes running toward China and the Middle East, and the castle was built in the 1700s to guard it — credited to Thakur Nawal Singh, a descendant of the Shekhawati rulers, and held by his family ever since.
Inside, antique murals, chandeliers and marble fountains survive where they were put. Rooms open off interior courtyards; the turrets and upper terraces look over the town's flat roofs and out into the Shekhawati scrub. What are the painted havelis of Mandawa?
Shekhawati's merchant families covered their havelis in frescoes through the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries — mythology, trains, aeroplanes, portraits. Mandawa has one of the densest concentrations, and Castle Mandawa runs guided fresco trails through them.
Where should you stay to see Shekhawati?
