Mandawa is the largest open-air art gallery in Rajasthan, and nobody built it as one. Shekhawati's merchant families competed through their walls — frescoing their havelisHaveliA traditional townhouse or mansion built around one or more internal courtyards.Read in the glossary inside and out with mythology, royal processions, and, as the century turned, motor cars, gramophones and aeroplanes painted by artists who had only ever heard them described.
The merchants themselves left for Calcutta and Bombay a hundred years ago and never came back. Their painted mansions stayed, and are fading now with a slowness that is part of the appeal — this is a town best seen before conservation either rescues it or does not.

Curator's Advisory
Walk the lanes early. The frescoes only read properly in slanted light — flat midday sun kills the relief and washes the pigment — and until mid-morning the town belongs to the people who live in it rather than to visitors. Many havelis are still private homes or locked; a guide who knows which doors open is the difference between a good morning and a frustrating one.
