Maidens opened in 1903 to house dignitaries at the Delhi DurbarDurbarThe court of an Indian ruler — and, by extension, the hall in which he gave audience, or the grand ceremonial assembly held there.Read in the glossary marking Edward VII's coronation as Emperor of India, succeeding the Maiden brothers' Metropolitan Hotel of 1894. It was designated a Heritage Hotel in 1994 and has been an Oberoi Group property since a 1968 merger.

Sir Edwin Lutyens stayed here while planning New Delhi's principal buildings, including Viceroy's House. The top suite is named after him; the fine-dining room is named for Curzon. It is a pearl-white colonial block in Civil Lines among turn-of-the-century bungalows and old trees, well north of the city Lutyens went on to build.

Why We Place Guests Here

  • It is the one Delhi hotel that is itself a piece of the city's history rather than a vantage point on it.
  • Civil Lines puts Old Delhi, Chandni Chowk and the Red Fort genuinely close — the metro is two hundred metres away and Old Delhi station three kilometres.
  • Fifty-odd rooms with arched windows, high ceilings and wooden floors: a different register from the Lutyens'-Delhi grand hotels, and the right one for some guests.

The Table

  • The Cavalry Bar

The Elevated India Signature

An early walk into Chandni Chowk from the north, the way the city was entered before the new capital existed.
