Jawai

Granite kopjes and wild leopards living openly beside the Rabari herdsmen — a coexistence found nowhere else.

Jawai behaves like Africa wearing Rajasthan's colours. Granite kopjes rise straight out of scrubland, and on them lives one of India's most visible wild leopard populations — not in a fenced park, but in open country the Rabari herdsmen have grazed for centuries.

What makes it remarkable is not the cats but the arrangement. The leopards take the high rocks, the shepherds take the ground, and the two have shared this landscape without a recorded killing of a herdsman in living memory. Neither side has been persuaded into it. It simply holds, and the community protects the cats because of it.

Curator's Advisory

Take dawn for the cats and dusk for the shepherds. The leopards come out onto the warm rocks in the first light, and at the other end of the day the flocks come home through the same terrain — the two halves of a single story, and the reason to stay two nights rather than one. Jawai is a conservation reserve rather than a national park, so the drives run on private and community land; this is what keeps the vehicle numbers low.
