Vadodara was the Gaekwad dynasty's capital, and the family built at a scale that still surprises visitors who arrive expecting a provincial city. Laxmi Vilas Palace covers roughly four times the footprint of Buckingham Palace, remains the family's residence, and holds the finest private collection of Raja Ravi Varma — the painter who gave Hindu deities their modern faces, working here under Gaekwad patronage.
Beyond the palace the city keeps a university-town temper: galleries, a serious music faculty, tree-lined avenues and a civic pride that never raises its voice. It is the most European-feeling city in Gujarat, and the least hurried.

Curator's Advisory
We will say plainly that Vadodara's hotels are the weakest part of the proposition — the city is worth a full day, and most guests take it from Ahmedabad rather than staying. Laxmi Vilas with its audio route in the morning and the Fateh Singh Museum's Ravi Varmas after will fill that day comfortably. Champaner-Pavagadh, the UNESCO citadel an hour east, is the excursion that justifies a second.
