Drive to Bhuj, the cultural heart of Kutch, and its palace complex — the mirror-and-gilt Aina Mahal and the Italianate Prag Mahal — then the old bazaar at dusk.

Drive into Saurashtra to Wankaner, a former princely state, and its heritage palace-hotel — the afternoon to explore the town and the Ranji Vilas palace.

Drive to Vadodara and the magnificent Laxmi Vilas Palace — four times the size of Buckingham Palace — and the royal Fateh Singh Museum.

A day excursion to the UNESCO-listed Champaner-Pavagadh — a medieval city of mosques, gateways, stepwells and palaces where Hindu and Islamic architecture meet.
"Champaner is the only complete pre-Mughal Islamic city that survives — the Jami Masjid there is one of the finest mosques in western India, and almost empty."
Drive south to Sasan Gir, the only place on earth outside Africa where wild lions still roam, and a forest lodge on the park's edge.
"Every wild Asiatic lion on earth — some 600–700 of them — lives in and around this one forest. Their recovery from a dozen animals a century ago is one of conservation's great stories."
An early jeep safari into Gir National Park for the Asiatic lion, alongside leopard, chital, sambar, nilgai and crocodile, with a second drive later if you wish.

Drive to Diu, a former Portuguese island possession on the Arabian Sea — the great sea-fort, St Paul's church, and sunset on the coast.
"Diu was Portuguese until 1961 and still feels it — a whitewashed, church-dotted island that is the quiet, uncrowded alternative to Goa."
The Portuguese old town and its churches, the honeycombed Naida Caves, and time on Nagoa beach before a coastal sunset.

Fly back to Mumbai for a final night, with time for last-minute shopping or a favourite corner of the city revisited.
