Fly from Delhi to Leh, one of the highest towns on earth — the whole day given to rest and acclimatisation, no exertion.

The first ride down the Indus valley to Temisgam, past the great monasteries of Likir and the old village of Alchi.

A gentle day around Temisgam — village walks and old monasteries — letting the body settle to the altitude.
"A second gentle day pays off later — the passes ahead are high, and altitude is best beaten slowly."
Ride back to Leh, with time for its old town, the palace and the market.
"Leh's nine-storey palace is a smaller cousin of the Potala in Lhasa — climb to the Shanti Stupa for the whole valley at sunset."
The great ride over Khardung La, one of the world's highest motorable passes, and down into the Nubra Valley to Hunder.
"Khardung La tops 5,300m — don't linger at the summit; the ride is about the descent into Nubra, a green valley between snow peaks."
A day in Nubra — the white sand dunes of Hunder and their double-humped Bactrian camels, relics of the old Silk Road.

Ride up the Nubra to Sumur and the Samstanling monastery, deeper into the valley's quiet.
"Sumur is Nubra without the crowds — the Samstanling gompa's monks will often show you the prayer halls themselves."
A long, spectacular ride to Pangong Lake — the vast high-altitude lake that shifts from turquoise to deep blue as the light moves, straddling the Tibet border.
"Pangong sits at 4,350m and runs 130km into Tibet — the water is brackish, so it freezes solid in winter. The colour genuinely changes hour by hour."
Ride south into the remote Changthang plateau to Hanle, a tiny settlement beneath one of the world's highest observatories.
"Hanle is deep in restricted border country — the ride there crosses vast empty plateau grazed by pashmina goats and the black tents of the Changpa nomads."
A day at Hanle — the Indian Astronomical Observatory by day and, at night, one of the darkest skies on earth in India's first Dark Sky Reserve.

Ride across the high plateau via Puga's hot springs to Tso Kar, the white salt lake, on the Rupshu plains.
"Tso Kar's shores are crusted white with salt once traded across Tibet — kiang (wild ass) and black-necked cranes are often out on the plain."
The ride back to Leh over the high Tanglang La pass, closing the great high-altitude loop.
"Tanglang La is another of the world's highest passes — a fitting final climb before the drop back into Leh."
A last day around Leh — the great monasteries of Thiksey, Hemis and Shey, and the market for a final wander.
"Thiksey, a miniature of the Potala, is best at the dawn prayers — horns from the roof and monks filing in as the valley lights up."
An early flight from Leh back to Delhi — the Himalaya falling away beneath the wing.
"The morning flight out of Leh, banking over the Himalaya, is one of the great last views in travel — sit on the left for the ranges."
