Jaisalmer stands where the caravan routes from Central Asia used to arrive, and it is built entirely from the yellow sandstone under it — which is why, an hour before sunset, the whole city turns the colour of a lit lamp.
Its fort is one of very few anywhere still inhabited: not a monument you visit but a quarter you walk through, with several thousand people living inside the walls, shops and temples and homes stacked into the ramparts. Then the Thar starts. The desert here is the reason to stay a second night: a camel out to the dunes in the late afternoon, dinner on the sand, and a sky with nothing between you and it.
